Ms. Cissy
“After my mom died, I was lost,” says Cheryl Saliba. Cheryl is a former pediatric nurse with 35 years of experience, but spent most of her time being a caretaker for her mother, Cissy.
“I checked on her twice a day, I would receive phone calls 10 times a day. What do I do now?”
As her mom’s caretaker, Cheryl had been providing for her mother’s basic needs, including getting her set up to receive meals through Meals on Wheels San Antonio when she was living alone. In 2019, Cissy passed away and Cheryl’s grieving soon turned to determination to make a difference.
“I felt like I just wanted to give back. What can I do to help?”
Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Cheryl signed up for a delivery route and now delivers meals to seniors throughout San Antonio. In volunteering with Meals on Wheels, Cheryl has been “heartbroken” by the conditions that many seniors live with every day. The seniors and disabled adults on her route live alone and are unable to provide or make their food.
“My favorite part is just seeing the joy of receiving their meals. No one should go hungry in our community.”
Community service also runs in the family. Cheryl's husband, George, and son, Clay, operate a family plumbing business that has been instrumental in helping many seniors recover from the effects of the February winter storm.
Today, Cheryl is a more active volunteer than ever, and she knows her mom’s memory lives on with each meal she delivers.
