Feeding the Heart of a Champion

Ms. Guadalupe

When health and financial challenges arise for Ms. Guadalupe, the generosity of friends like you gives her a helping hand.

Ms. Guadalupe, a divorced mother with two daughters, lives alone on the northeast side of San Antonio.

During her career, Ms. Guadalupe worked at Southwest General Hospital for 25 years as a data entry specialist. In her spare time, she worked as a basketball coach to help young boys develop fundamental skills.

“We were district champs for two years,” says Ms. Guadalupe. “I love sports. I enjoyed playing pool with friends. Once I learned how to play, there was no stopping me.”

She led a team that played for the 8 Ball Association in San Antonio.

“One year, we went to the championship and got second place,” she says.

Ms. Guadalupe is physically unable to prepare meals for herself. She is living with arthritis, diabetes, bone-on-bone knee problems, lower back pain, and stage 4 kidney disease. Even though she is faced with health challenges, Ms. Guadalupe receives the extra help she needs and refuses to let anything stop her.

“I appreciate the help from Meals on Wheels because it alleviates financial stress. Social Security is the only source of income I receive,” says Ms. Guadalupe. She is one of 62% of our clients living on an annual salary of less than $15,000.

Ms. Guadalupe’s favorite Meals on Wheels entree is the meatloaf with broccoli and mashed potatoes.

“If they send that meal every other week, I will be grateful,” says Ms. Guadalupe.

During the pandemic, Ms. Guadalupe remains safe by limiting her social interactions and practicing safe physical distancing with Meals on Wheels volunteers during each delivery.
