"I was born at the Nix Hospital in San Antonio," says Ms. Imogene. The Texas native joined Meals on Wheels in 2018. Meal preparation is challenging as Ms. Imogene, who lives alone with her cat, Kitty, is unable to stand for a long period of time. She has four children: two girls and two boys. Her oldest daughter, Karen, is the only child living in San Antonio while the rest live abroad.

Ms. Imogene and her late husband survived the polio epidemic of 1946 and World War II. "We had to stay safe during those times," says Ms. Imogene. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Ms. Imogene is taking safe precautions by sanitizing items with Lysol wipes and practicing social distancing. "Meals on Wheels is a lifesaver. I have to refrain from hugging volunteers," says Ms. Imogene. Her favorite entrees include mashed potatoes, squash, carrots, and baked chicken.

Ms. Imogene has a passion for gardening and arts & crafts. Her ceramic works made a significant impact at the 1973 Arts & Crafts Fair in Kerrville, Texas. "I loved incorporating watercolors and china painting into decorative pieces," says Ms. Imogene. Her favorite memory as a child was laying flowers for the Alamo's Pilgrim March.

Volunteers admire Ms. Imogene's garden as they deliver meals. "I enjoy it when they ask about my plants. I've even given a few away to Meals on Wheels volunteers," says Ms. Imogene. During these uncertain times, Ms. Imogene's advice is forgiveness, faith in God, devotion, and smiling.

"A positive attitude can be contagious," says Ms. Imogene.
