Ms. Mamie

Ms. MamieMs. Mamie, 80 years old, was her husband’s caretaker for the last six years of his life. After he passed, Mamie’s health steadily declined. Ms. Mamie had weighed just 100 pounds and was too weak to cook for herself. That’s when her sister called Meals on Wheels to get her on service.

Ms. Mamie received her first Meals on Wheels meal in May 2022. After just two months of receiving nutritious lunchtime meals, she gained weight and her health began to improve. She felt like she had more energy to do the things that bring her joy, like painting small crafts for the neighborhood kids.

Ms. Mamie“You lose your independence, but you gain new independence. It’s a beautiful thing because I don’t have to worry,” Ms. Mamie says. She is grateful for the Meals on Wheels program and the support she receives from the services. Her favorite meal is the chicken patty with mashed potatoes and buttered broccoli. “I love the meals and I sure am still trying to figure out your recipes! I always think, they got something here and it’s really good,” she says. Now, Ms. Mamie enjoys chatting with her Meals on Wheels volunteer and sharing stories about her art and her life.
