Giving Back to Veterans

Mr. Walter

Mr. Walter, a World War II veteran, appreciates the reliability of Meals on Wheels San Antonio.

“I just turned 100 years old,” says Mr. Walter, a WWII veteran who has lived in his San Antonio home for over 30 years. “I feel good but my hip hurts me all the time.”

Mr. Walter began receiving Meals on Wheels in 2019 after falling and breaking his hip. “Before my accident, I would cook for myself. If I didn’t have Meals on Wheels, I would just eat a bowl of cereal.”

Mr. Walter was born and raised in Pennsylvania and grew up in a poor household with three brothers. Mr. Walter’s adolescence was spent working as a farmhand picking potatoes and earning $1.50 a day. “I was brought up in the hard times. You ate what was on the table, or you didn’t eat. My mother was a genius. She could make a meal out of almost nothing.”

Soon after, Mr. Walter was drafted during World War II and served as a military policeman in the Air Force for 4 ½ years. It was during that time Mr. Walter would meet and marry his late wife. “I got married in Paris to a beautiful lady I met there. We had two children and were married for over 50 years. I miss her a lot.”

Meals on Wheels San Antonio is proud to serve Mr. Walter and give back to veterans who fought for their country. “The people who make these meals do a heck of a job. I can depend on it. I can expect it’s there on time. Same time every day.”
